Blog Spotlight: Chris Guillebeau and the Art of Non-conformity by Marlana Moore
I have had an uncertain relationship with “non-conformity” since high school. In my early teens, I thought non-conformity could be found in Hot Topic, that scary looking shop in the mall. I shake my head thinking about the babysitting dollars I drained on plastic jelly bracelets and mass produced t-shirts. I used their “weird” and “different” clothing to express a certain discomfort with myself, because I didn’t want to fit in with everybody else.
Letter to the Editor from Le Ngo
Dear the Editor of the Johnsonville Press,
As a part of a class project at Rutgers University, I came across a website that evaluates many charitable organizations to help donors make the most informed decisions. The website is Charitynavigator.org. Because of its high level of helpfulness, I feel the need to share my knowledge of the website to as many people as possible, hopefully through the help of the Johnsonville Press.
A Photoseries from the Rally to Restore Sanity ~ Matia Guardabascio and Alex Giannattasio
Here is a short photo series from the Rally to Restore Sanity. More pictures to come this week. Expect to see an article from me as well. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these pictures. I hope they make you feel as though you were there.
Sincerely, Matia Guardabascio, Editor-In-Chief
Inside JVP: An Interview with Rebecca Zandstein by Ben Kharakh
Readers only get a taste of Gourmet Grub editor Rebbeca Zandstein from her articles, so with this Q and A I was aiming to serve up a hearty portion of Becca. As our conversation progressed, I learned plenty about my fellow JVPer that I didn’t know, so much so that a single piece simply will not suffice. Luckily, Becca’s the sort of writer that can be counted on to provide her fair share of articles, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of what we talked about ends up inspiring future pieces. Until then, bon appetit!
Inside JVP: An interview with Jhoany Benitez by Ben Kharakh
I’ve seen a lot of people pass through the JVP’s Internet doors, so I don’t start to think of someone as a regular until they’ve made a sizable amount of contributions. I first noticed Jhoany at meetings in the Spring of 2010, but it wasn’t until this Fall that she’d really proved herself to be one of JVP’s MVPs. If the JVP is a sports team, then Jhoany is whatever position one who is more familiar with sports than myself would reference in order to make an effective analogy
Inside JVP: An Interview with Dave Imbriaco by Ben Kharakh
One of the perks of being a journalist is that I get an excuse to satiate my curiosity. Case in point: this new feature in which I interview my JVPeers about themselves. I kicked things off with an autobiographical essay so that you’d get to know a little bit about me and a Q and A with Dave Imbriaco.
Reflections on a Past Life ~ Ben Kharakh
I are an ESL student. My parents may have taught me Russian, but I think I learned English from TV. That might be why I developed a speaking impediment that required three years of speech therapy to correct. One time I mispronounced a word so severely that it made my parents laugh. Something about that moment made me want to figure out how to make them laugh on purpose rather than by accident.
A Summer Compensated ~ Matia Guardabascio
This summer turned out to be wholly reckless. I made time for my bad habits in and around stretches of responsible behavior. They’re not really that bad… I mean whiskey in the summer? It’s the only thing that takes the edge off the heat. It gives me something to chat about other than the obvious…
On Debt and Deficits – Alexander Draine
Draine on Society
Recently, several pieces of legislation crafted by Congress have come under fire from politicians for their effect on the national debt. Typically these critics have been dubbed “deficit hawks” due to their conservative, or hawkish, viewpoints on the subject. But this type of behavior is not limited to one side of the political aisle. Indeed, all sound-minded and forward-looking individuals ought to agree that we must ultimately reduce the size of the national debt. Thus, a closer look into the nature of debt and deficits is warranted.
