School Daze – Ben Kharakh

2000Ben
When I entered high school, I was told that all of my classes would be honors classes. My thought, then, was that none of my classes would be honors classes because juxtaposition is required to make that sort of distinction. (Honors without non-honors is like up without down!) Whenever I voiced this opinion I wasn’t given the response I expected, which disappointed me given that was around the time that I’d learned the word “juxtaposition” and I was pretty excited to use it.

College in the Hands of an Angry Frat Boy – John Gideon

Can an otherwise respectable student go Greek and maintain his respectability?

Hi there. My name is John. I like baseball, cheeseburgers, and going to the movies. I am a student at Rutgers University. I study political science. I am also in a fraternity. Won’t you be my friend?

It’s true. I did it. I took the plunge, and I don’t care who knows it. I went Greek, and am now a full-fledged brother in a full-fledged fraternity. No, this isn’t one of your mamby-pamby co-ed honors frats or pre-professional organizations. My fraternity comes complete with a rigorous pledging process, a big house with our letters on the front, and a reputation for throwing a wild party.

In his last piece, Ben Kharakh took a tour of New Brunswick with Charlie Kratovil, local political activist, to get an inside view of the Hub City. This week, Ben took the time to tour the city with Bill Bray, City Spokesman to incumbent Mayor Jim Cahill, in order to get the other side of the story. Bill spoke of his time in New Brunswick and some of the city’s positions on low income housing the “swing space” school on Jersey Avenue, and initiatives to combat littering.

School or Warehouse? – Ben Kharakh

Some people call Rutgers “Slutgers”. I don’t like that name because it perpetuates the stigmatization of female sexuality. If I wanted to, I’d call it “Notverygoodgers”, but I wouldn’t call it that either because I don’t really get angry. I’m like Bruce Banner, except my inner Hulk is also Bruce Banner.

I also can’t really tell you what I think of Rutgers because I transferred in the spring of ‘09 and I’ve been a commuter until recently. Being a commuter is like going to an all you can eat buffet and then eating more than your fill to get your money’s worth. You leave with a stomachache and realize that you haven’t gotten your money’s worth at all and that you should have just lived on campus. So, I put down my knife and fork and moved into a place half a mile from College Ave.

Local Group Urges Senate to Vote Down S-3157
Today, the State Senators of New Jersey are being asked to vote on S-3157. If signed into law, it would extend the time citizens must wait between submitting petitions for charter changes from 4 years to 10 years.  This is unreasonable, undemocratic, and harmful overall to civic engagement, and we are asking our State Senators to vote against this measure.

As a Rutgers student, I am constantly bombarded with pizzerias’ pamphlets in New Brunswick and the neighboring town of Highland Park. Though there are more than nine different places on Easton Avenue alone that offer pizza, all are extremely different. Being a vegetarian and a student means I look at the options a pizzeria offers regarding freshness, amount of vegetables on a slice of pizza, and value for my money. For a few days I went to several local pizza shops and tried one or two of their vegetarian options.
