This summer turned out to be wholly reckless. I made time for my bad habits in and around stretches of responsible behavior. They’re not really that bad… I mean whiskey in the summer? It’s the only thing that takes the edge off the heat. It gives me something to chat about other than the obvious…

One less ‘N’ than the meal I
Ate twice tonight—

THE POUND-ELIOT EXCHANGE
Poem by Matia Guardabascio
Critique by Stacey Balkun
“Problems with Authority”
Poetry is pointless
Like pursuing a love that belongs
                   to someone else.
Don’t lie to me. I know you do
Not understand.
This is the age of broken souls;
No poetry beats here,
No love pulsates in these veins.
I belong to the generation of the youthful
Sinewy races
And None the rest on us depend,[i]
Unwanted as we are…
And yet here we are; here
We are thrust into a world
That does not want us.
Fuck you and your authority.
I am me
And I don’t want you either.
This poem works through example to list …

Today I make lists to make sense
of this week, I wash clean sheets
just to smell fabric softener,
go to the grocery to pick fresh greens
and collects the confidence
that comes from checking off a list.

1. Recommendation of the Day:  Check out “The Wanderer Sessions” from Pollifax. If you want to hear some quality, spur of the moment live music from some local musicians, and from musicians passing through New Brunswick, then you want to hear this shit. I am personally very impressed with the quality of the music and the way in which Kevin frames it in the videos. “The Wanderer Sessions” does a great job showcasing the good, young talent in and around Rutgers and …

1. Book Recommendation of the Day: The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton. This book is a short novella from the earlier part of the 20th century. If you like detective stories, short fiction, anarchy, politics, exuberance for life, and a seriously entertaining and easy style of writing, then read this book. Chesterton is one of the greats of the 20th century, and is sadly not well known or studied in school. He was a novelist, essayist, theologian, economist, and just …

1. Recommendation of the Day: Bon Iver
If you are depressed, recently broke up with someone or are generally miserable all the time, then you would like Bon Iver. His music is a perfect unity of melody and lyrics. He says so much in so few words, that I can’t help but marvel at his use of metaphor.  If I had to describe his sound to you, I probably wouldn’t, I’d just tell you to listen to it. So on that note, listen …
