In Support of the Study of Art History ~ Alex Giannattasio
I will be arguing in defense of the study of art history. My reasons for doing so are elaborated below. I have included in this piece a number of pictures of some of my favorite pieces of art. They are reproduced here under the fair use policy of the United States. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
McCormick’s Presidential Address and What It Means for You ~ Marlana Moore
This past Friday, President Richard McCormick addressed the entirety of students, faculty and staff of Rutgers from New Brunswick, Newark and Camden in his annual Presidential Address. It took place at the University Senate meeting, in the Multipurpose Room of the Rutgers Student Center. I was bothered from the beginning.
On Corruption, Tomatoes, and Why You’re in Grad School or Back at Home Instead of Working at a Real Job ~ Brendan Kaplan
As I sit here on this first cool day of my last year at Rutgers University, I can’t believe the amount of change I have seen in the world over the past ten years.
Our nation has experienced a series of devastating events, each evoking distant seeming memories of times long ago. As the Project for A New American Century (PNAC) put it, “a new pearl harbor”, found in 9/11 both shocked and energized us. The country pulled together and a feeling of nostalgic familiarity of “the just war”, last seen during WWII, made us all sure that America could rise above this crisis as it had others in the past.
Feminism is Not a Dirty Word ~ Marlana Moore
“I’m not a feminist, but…” I hear this phrase a lot, and I suppose that at one point in time I was guilty of using it too. However, just as… Read more
Interview with Yousef Saleh ~ Marlana Moore
Sitting down to talk with Yousef Saleh, the first democratically elected Rutgers University Student Assembly president, was a treat. He is enthusiastic and dedicated, traits he used to describe to his fellow democratically elected RUSA representatives. Even though this seems to be a year of change for RUSA, Yousef says that the constitution, available on RUSA’s website, has finally finished being revised and amended. In our conversation, Yousef outlined his goals for the year.
An L Passenger’s Lament ~ Brian Connolly
There are quite a few things I remember from my freshmen year: a time spent hunkered in the sub-basement of what was once a military barrack, originally commissioned to prep soldiers for active combat in Nam. For instance, I distinctly recall walking in on my roommate, on numerous occasions, scrolling through some of the more unusual entries on WebMD in an attempt to pigeonhole his deteriorating medical condition.
Buying Used ~ Marlana Moore
Moving into my first place, even an off-campus apartment, means I need a lot of Stuff. There is a kitchen to fill–pots, pans, plates, knives, forks, then the living room, my bedroom. They are all filled with things, things, things. I know what a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond or Target or even Walmart will cost me, and I have helped furnish my share for a fraction of what those stores would have cost me. There is an element of convenience when stepping into a store like Target.
Get Involved: Big Brothers Big Sisters & Scarlet Listeners ~ Ben Kharakh
“It’s all about who you know,” isn’t just a piece of business acumen; it’s a fact of life. If you know the right people, life can be easy going; but… Read more
Institutional and Community Response to Sexual Assault on the Rutgers Campus ~ Ben Kharakh
I was shocked when I first heard the statistic that one in six women experiences sexual assault in their lifetimes. This was years ago. I didn’t know much about gender issues then. Now, however, after doing plenty of reading and having plenty of discussions, my knowledge of gender issues has increased tremendously. The statistic is no longer shocking, but it is unhelpful. To me, statistics are often so wholly abstracted from reality that they feel as though they hardly describe the world at all. As a result, “one in six” is sort of like, “1.3 trillion dollars.” It’s just hard for me to understand what these numbers mean. And with this in-depth article, I try to get just at the meaning of those numbers.
